How to Share Your Home Network Info With a QR Code

Whenever friends and family visit, they often ask to connect to your Wi-Fi, and even if you remember the complex password, typing it in manually can be a hassle. But what if there was a simple and secure way to share your network? Good news—there is! It’s called a QR code, and creating one is easier than you might think. Let us show you how.

At Asurion, we’re here to help millions of people repair, troubleshoot, and get the most out of their tech and appliances. Whether it’s speeding up a sluggish laptop or keeping your phone from overheating, we’re dedicated to ensuring your devices stay up and running every day. Here are our tips for creating a Wi-Fi QR code, whether you’re using an iPhone® or an Androidâ„¢.

What is a QR code?

Quick Response (QR) codes are scannable patterns that contain digital information such as website links or coupon codes. You’ve likely seen them at restaurants, coffee shops, or on business cards. These square-shaped codes feature a black-and-white pattern that, when scanned with your smartphone, provides contactless access to online information.

Once you’ve created your Wi-Fi QR code, all your guests need to do is point their mobile device’s camera at the code, tap to confirm when prompted to join the network, and just like that, they’re connected.

How to create a QR code on your Android

Android phones have a built-in Wi-Fi QR code generator that works with your network credentials. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Make sure you’re connected to the Wi-Fi network you want to share.
  2. Tap Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi or Settings > Network & internet > Internet, then tap the gear to the right of your network.
  3. Tap QR code. If this is not an option, tap the Share button on the right (you may need to use your PIN or fingerprint to confirm it’s you). This will generate a QR code with your Wi-Fi name and password.
  4. Take a screenshot of the code image if you want to save it for future use. You can also regenerate it anytime.
